The New Retail

Sometimes you don’t want to wear the piece of clothing that looks like the piece of clothing…do you know what I mean?? You want to wear the exact skirt, the exact pattern, but in YOUR size. There are so many amazing plus size brands that have popped up and I’m so grateful for them, but there’s something so satisfying being able to wear the exact thing that you spotted on the street or in the magazine. After being rejected by fashion brands for my entire life, I am way beyond hurt feelings for not being able to shop something that’s my size. Fortunately, I’m well-versed in finding something similar to scratch the itch, but with the increase in visibility for plus size women this year, brands of all sorts are starting to acknowledge that they ignored a customer base that is very eager to wear their clothes.

Here are some of the new options for plus this spring.

Reformation

Reformation is a brand I’ve looked at from afar for quite some time, and their silhouettes and models certainly seemed to favor a body type that was not mine. They even launched a “special size” last year that accommodated “curves”, when what they meant was that if you’re skinny with big boobs, they got you now. That was sad for me, but when I saw they collaborated with Ali Tate Cutler and made a few select classic styles in sizes 0-22 with the tag line “Sorry it took us so long”, it really hit me. I know we’re just talking about a dress here, but to have a brand say “Fuck, we’re sorry”, it was really moving for me. These styles are perfect for this summer in the hot city streets and I’m wearing a 3X in this polka dot number.

Mara Hoffman

I’ve been finding pieces that work for my body from Mara Hoffman for years, but they have to be very specific, a.k.a., they have to have stretch or be super flowy. It’s really incredible to just see a dress and pick my size rather than just cheat my way into the outfit. Without fanfare and big announcement, Mara Hoffman seamlessly introduced some of their best styles for summer, like this gingham number that I love. Fingers crossed they decide to do their signature swim, too.

Coedition

Coedition is like the Shopbop for plus. I love them because they’re new and constantly adding new designers all the time. I’m super excited about brands they stock like Cynthia Rowley, exclusive collaborations, and silhouettes not typically geared towards plus. Bonus – they stock size 12W shoes, too 😉 I’m having a real moment with dresses right now and this one rounds out the trio.
