Today I’m handing the keys to the kingdom to my bestie Ryan from @extraextrastyle for a post on men’s shorts. We’re both big on inclusive sizing (the body pos movement is for guys too!) and spend lots of time scouring the net for brands that are inviting everyone to the party. I don’t know about you, but while the men in my life differ in size, they share one thing in common: their clothes could use a major upgrade (except for you of course, Ryan)! If your man is rolling around in old, dingy (maybe college era??) shorts, keep reading cuz Ryan is going to sort you/him out!
It’s almost summer, which means one thing and one thing only: it’s almost shorts season. “But Ryan,” you may say, “Doesn’t summer also mean it’s time for ice cream and road trips?” No. The season for ice cream is all seasons, and I live in New York City and don’t have a car. So. Shorts it is.
Like everything in my life, I have a strategy when it comes to building the perfect shorts wardrobe (what can I say, I’m a planner). The perfect “asshortment” (get it?) to keep you feeling and looking cool consists of… Something Bold, Something New, Something Cargo-d and Something Blue!
Something Bold
You can get away with things in the summer that you can’t get away with any other time year (like drinking an entire bottle of White Girl Rosé by yourself). Maybe you wouldn’t wear pink pants, or trousers with little critters or tennis racquets embroidered on them – but shorts? Go crazy! My pick? These palm-printed cuties from American Eagle Outfitters (available in sizes 26-46).
Something New
For my purposes, new means crisp, tailored and saturated. Nothing faded, frayed or frumpy. These Lands’ End shorts in Light Stone (available in sizes 44-54) are as good with a crisp button down and gingham tie as they are with a classic polo (pop the collar at your own risk).
Something Cargo-d
Cargo shorts get a bum rap: too fratty on the one hand, too frumpy on the other. These Polo Ralph Lauren cargo shorts (available in sizes 40-58) are neither: the inseam hits just above the knee and the pockets lie flat (PSA: despite their name, the pockets are not really for storing your cargo. Don’t do it). I would get them in white and wear them all summer long (or at least until I spilled ketchup on them).
Something Blue
Navy, cobalt, sky – whatever. It doesn’t matter, but get some blue shorts into your closet STAT. Like jeans, they go with everything. I’m wearing these Shark Print Bermuda Shorts from DXL (available in sizes 38-56) from now until September!
