Apartment Makeover: My Bedroom

GENEVIEVE GARRUPPO FOR HOMEPOLISH featuring designer Tina Rich

Welcome to Apartment Reveal Week on the blog! After many months of planning, shopping, returning, more shopping and styling, I couldn’t be more excited to share my finished NYC apartment with you. It’s totally adult yet still fun and a little wild, just like me! I’m kicking things off today with maybe my favorite room (maybe??), MY BEDROOM, but be sure to check back all week long for the full tour of amazingness!

I knew from the get-go that decorating an apartment was well above my pay grade, so my first step was to bring in hired help. After seeing their work seemingly everywhere, I knew I wanted to work with Homepolish. If you’re not familiar, it’s a super innovative and flexible approach to interior design. You pay hourly to work with a skilled designer who will take on anything from a small refresh to a total home overhaul, literally whatever you need. I think it really is the best (and most affordable) way to successfully realize your vision and bring it all together. And Homepolish is available nationwide (not just NYC) so if you haven’t checked them out I highly recommend you do!

When I sat down with designer Tina Rich to discuss the design plan, I was certain of two things. One, the apartment needed to look like me, which meant lots of fun pattern and color, but still feel serene and adult. And two, I had to have a Beverly Hills Hotel inspired bedroom, no ifs ands or buts!

There’s nothing like a Bev Hills Hotel inspired bedroom to make you feel glamorous and chic. I should know, I’ve had palm print wallpaper in my past two apartments, but this one by Chasing Paper from Bloomingdales is by far the best. It’s removable (though you would never know) and sets the perfect vibe for the space.

With the wall making such a statement, we wanted to keep the other elements soft and neutral. The bed and tufted bench are both from Joss & Main and make me feel like a true lady everyday with their pretty lines and beautiful upholstery. The nightstands are also Joss & Main, and I love how the metallic surface brings a shiny texture into the room while still feeling quiet.

There was a lot of debate on the bedding, and in the end we kept everything white with pale pink to keep it serene and sophisticated. The bedding is all Serena & Lily, and I am a big fan. Their sheets are crazy soft and silky and I love the simplicity of the border on the duvet cover. The alpaca throw from Parachute home adds just the right amount of texture and coziness and softens up all the white (and to be honest it’s so snuggly I use it a lot on the couch too).

One area where I desperately needed a life upgrade but didn’t even realize it was my pillows. I hadn’t changed them in eight years (gross!), so when I got new Casper pillows I was shocked at how comfy they are and how much better I sleep. It’s like laying on a cloud and is totally life changing!

An important side note on pillows… Jonathan Adler once said if you are spending more than three minutes taking pillows off your bed at night, you have a problem. Yes, I have 11 pillows but I timed myself de-pillowing and clocked in at just under two minutes so I’m good!

I’m obsessed with Dyson, and could never live without my air purifier and humidifier. Come summer, I’ll lose the humidifier and double up on fans. In every room. Basically, I’m never rolling with fewer than two Dyson products per room, which I think might be the definition of baller when you hit your 30s??

Finally, we wanted to include a couple fun accessories to give the room a playful element. The Emily & Meritt Pottery Barn Teen Bunny Alarm Clock is quirky and chic at the same time (and a great way to keep your clock reading skills sharp if you are challenged like me). A stack of pink books is the perfect finishing touch (pro tip: check etsy shops like this one for books by color).

Well excuse me, the real finishing touch is obviously Pants, who also finds this room totally posh and cozy.

This is the absolute bedroom of my dreams and short of taking up residence in the Beverly Hills Hotel, I can’t think of a better place to wake up everyday! It’s glam and fun yet totally calm and 100% on brief.

Check back tomorrow for my entryway reveal — I’ve got more wallpaper coming your way, plus a great source for non-creepy dog art (who wouldn’t want that!??).
